DIY : HOW IT STARTED?
The term or acronym ” do-it-yourself ” has been associated with consumers since at least 1912 and was primarily related to the domain of home improvement and maintenance activities. The phrase ” Do it yourself ” had come into regular usage by the 1950s, in reference to the emergence of a trend of people undertaking home improvement and various other small craft and construction projects as both a creative-recreational as well as cost-cutting activity.
Artists began to fight against mass production and mass culture by claiming to be self-made. These DIY practices also responded to Geopolitical tensions, rising unemployment and social tensions. In 1960s and 1970s, books and television shows about DIY movement and techniques on Building and Home decoration started appearing. By the 1990s, with computers and internet becoming mainstream, the DIY movement also felt the strong impact.
